After two weeks in the bush, we were looking forward to a couple of days laying on an Indian Ocean beach on the island of Zanzibar. After a short flight from Arusha in a small twin engine plane, we landed in the small airport on the island. It was a short taxi ride to historic Stone Town in Zanzibar City. Stone Town is an aging colonial town that is a mixture of European and Arabic architecture. Our hotel, the Zanzibar Serena Inn, was a beautiful hotel right on the beach in the center of town. Our room was on the top floor with a spacious balcony that overlooked the pool courtyard and the beach. After taking a luxurious shower we went for a stroll around the historic town after which we returned to our room and ordered dinner from room service. As the sun set we enjoyed a great dinner while watching the fishing boats pass by in front of our hotel.

The next morning we met our shuttle driver that drove us to the east coast of the island to the Breezes Resort. The resort is located in a large compound on the white sand beach with beautiful bungalo buildings set in lush green vegetation. There is a large barrier reef on the east coast of the island and when we arrived the tide was out and the reef was exposed for two hundred yards out into the sea. The balmy breeze blew in off the ocean and walking on the beach was very relaxing. We spent the next two days relaxing on the beach and swimming in the Indian Ocean. On our last day we went on a snorkeling trip out on the reef. Unfortunately, the currents were pretty strong and the visibility was not great.

After our relaxing stay, we caught a small plane out of Zanzibar to Dar es salaam and then flew up to Nairobi, Kenya. We spent our final night in Africa in the bustling city and our wonderful trip finally came to the end as we caught our plane back to the states.
